ABOUT MASSAPEQUA, NY
Massapequa is a commuter suburb of New York located in the southern part of Oyster Bay. This Nassau County hamlet borders the Long Island town of Amityville. Like Massapequa Park, this hamlet is a tranquil place where residents come to put down long-term roots. In fact, many people who grow up here stay in the community to raise children of their own, making it sometimes difficult to find houses for sale.
Massapequa has a rich history dating back to the time before the first European explorers. The village contains the only Indian fort known to have existed in western Long Island. Fort Massapeag was once a 100 foot log stockade, used intensively in the mid 1600s by both natives and European colonists. Located on Fort Neck, and now little more than a grassy knoll, it’s been a designated National Historic Landmark since 1993. It was first discovered back in the1930s when excavation for the Green Harbor subdivision turned up a number of human skeletons and Indian artifacts.
Today, Massapequa has a total area of four square miles, including nearly a half mile of shorefront. Over 40 percent of its residents hold bachelor’s or master’s degrees, and the median household income is well over twice the national average. Jewish and Italian Americans are the two dominant ethnic groups in this close-knit community. The vast majority of residents — 93 percent — own their own homes.
The median real estate value of a single family home in Massapequa is more than double the national average. Luxury homes for sale on the shorefront, which has recovered from the extensive damage it suffered during Hurricane Sandy, typically sell for more than one million dollars. Lower-priced listings are mainly north of Sunrise Highway (Route 27).
Residents report taking full advantage of the village’s close proximity to both nature and culture. Massapequa Preserve, a popular recreation area, is a long slice of woods, marshes, and lakes that extends on both sides of Sunrise Highway, with a paved trail for jogging and biking. There is also the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail, which, as the name implies, runs along the boundary between the two counties. The village has a number of popular restaurants, including the Riviera at Massapequa, Big Daddy’s, and Salumi Tapas & Winery. Westfield Sunrise Mall, built in 1973, is an after school hangout baby boomers remember fondly; it still remains the area’s premiere shopping area.
Another advantage of living in Massapequa is you have the option of driving yourself or taking public transportation into the city. The average time to make the 34 mile drive to Manhattan is 40 minutes — without traffic, of course. The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) takes approximately 90 minutes.
